Photographer of the Month: DeShaun Craddock
Photography is more than taking a picture. It is learning how to see. It stands to reason then that if one has learned to see, the more one looks around in different places, the more photographic opportunities they will see, of more than one style. Our Photographer of the Month DeShaun Craddock sees wonder everywhere. His work ranges from the street to the concert, abstract to architecture, and beyond. It is my pleasure to present to you this month the work and words of DeShaun Craddock.

How did you get interested in photography?
I always had a curiosity about cameras, even when I was very little, but my first interest in photography was when I was in college. A friend had a basic digital point & shoot, and he was nice enough to let me use it often. That curiosity I had as a child was rekindled.

How long have you been a photographer?
I started teaching myself in 2008, but I don't think I became a photographer until 2011. It was around that time that I felt comfortable in what I was doing and confident in figuring out things I didn't know yet.

What is your favorite place to photograph? Or subject?
Cities. I'm from New York so I guess I'm just partial to the geometry of a city, and capturing how people fit into urban backdrops. If I could hop from city to city doing street shots, I'd be very happy.

How can photographers help change/impact the world, while they are traveling?
The camera is a very powerful communication tool. You can do so much more than show a beautiful scene. Perhaps you can share a story through your images, or give your time sharing someone else's. Use that time to learn and use those images to spread the word.

Are there rules in other countries people need to be aware of about who or what you can or cannot shoot?
I think it's important to research before setting off to a new destination. Even different cities within the same country may have different rules about what can and can't be photographed, so take a little extra time to look into it, and if you find yourself in a situation, be courteous and understanding. You're a visitor, after all, and you can't always expect to get a pass because you're ignorant to the rules.

Any photography tips you want to share?
Try not to impulse delete your photos. Sometimes, the image you thought was a failure on the back of your camera is a keeper once you get it home, and you may not realize this for a few days.
