Germany is arguably one of the most fascinating countries in the world and has something to offer every traveller. With a fascinating history, stunning natural scenery, vibrant cities and iconic cuisine, there’s plenty to love about it.

If you’re lucky enough to be travelling or studying abroad in Germany, you’re sure to have a busy itinerary ahead of you. To offer some more inspiration here are 10 of the best sights, attractions and experiences to add to the list.

1. Spend a few wild weeks in Berlin

The hedonistic capital will take more than just one weekend to tackle. Berlin has something to delight everyone, from doner kebabs to wartime relics, underground raves to elegant government buildings.

 

2. Catch up on your history

Germany was a key player throughout much of the 20th century and evidence of the First and Second World Wars, as well as the Cold War, is scattered across the country. Be sure to visit Checkpoint Charlie, The Brandenburg Gate, and what remains of the iconic Berlin Wall.

 

3. Marvel at the architecture

Some of the biggest names in modern architecture have left their mark in Berlin, including designs by Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Alvar Aalto. Thanks to the World War bombing raids, the country is today made up of a fascinating patchwork of the old and the new.

4. Discover sauerkraut

Love it or hate it, German food will certainly leave its mark. Dine on sauerkraut, dumplings and Bratwurst, snack on pretzels, and indulge yourself with marzipan and stollen. 

 

5. Go on a brewery tour

Germany is home to some of the world’s most delicious and diverse beers, including Pilsner, Paulaner, and Weihenstephaner. Discover where your favourite amber nectar originated from with a brewery tour, or take things to the next level with a trip to Oktoberfest in Munich.

 

6. Hit the ski slopes

Germany boasts some of the best ski facilities in the world, so be sure to hit the slopes while you’re here. Some of the highlights include areas like Garmisch in the Bavarian Alps and the Oberstdorf area, located between Munich and Stuttgart.

 

7. Be king of the castle

Germany has some of the most impressive castles in the world, such as Neuschwanstein, which is nestled in the Alps. 

 

8. Christmas markets

The Germans certainly take their festive season seriously. The ancient city of Nuremberg is a great destination in which to explore Christmas markets, with hundreds of wooden stalls offering the best in festive presents, foods and trinkets.

 

9. Explore the Black Forest

Located between the spa town of Baden Baden and the Swiss border is the Black Forest. Consisting of rolling hills, quaint villages and lush forestland, this is a beautiful place to enjoy a cycle or a drive. Be sure to also sample some rich chocolate cake, cherries and cream – the dessert named after the area.

 

10. Learn the language

If you want to really take something lasting away from your time abroad, learning the language is an invaluable life skill. There are plenty of courses available where you can learn German in Berlin. However, for a more effective learning environment, it’s worthwhile finding something both practical and hands on.
