Foodie Finds: Chequers of Saugatuck
Alas! They are now closed.
Located on an alleyway a block before the main drag in Saugatuck is a portal to the UK. What is this portal, you ask? None other than long-time local favorite Chequers. It's a British pub that takes you straight to England.
Named after the official country home of the British Prime Ministers, you'll love the decor - full of British signs, photos, commmemorative plates, and more. But the real gem here is the menu, especially the fish and chips, for which Chequers is well-known. They arrive at the table before the waiter does, even - with a waft of that hot, steamy, battered fish goodness. And once the fish and chips are in front of you? Oh yes. Crispy, with tender fish inside, and enough so that you're satisfied.
Take a look at this deliciousness.
And another.
And another.
Yes. Amazing!
When I asked the waiter how many people usually order the fish and chips, he noted about 75%. SMART DINERS. Although, of course, there are many other delicious offerings on the menu, including a great burger (my husband loves burgers), an excellent ploughman's platter, some Indian dishes, and more.
There's a beautiful bar, and plenty to look at while you wait.
Let's discuss the wait. If you come during the summer, you will probably wait. This is true at any restaurant in Saugatuck - the population explodes in summer. In the winter, you can just saunter right in and cozy up in a nook, and settle in for the evening. The service can be hit or miss, depending on how crowded Chequers is.
And, of course, afterward be sure to head to award-winning Oval Beach and swim (or walk) for the rest of the evening. What a perfect outing!
