Old Quebec City's Maze of Streets Reveals Crazy, Colorful Painted Doors
We’ve just returned from an Epic Canadian Road Trip, driving from our home in Kalamazoo, Michigan all the way out to St. John’s, Newfoundland (yes, a ferry was involved). Why? Well, I’m the co-founder of Writing Walking Women, and we chose St. John’s as the site of our conference this year – MUCH more on that to come! And, our daughter, Lillie (13), said that every teen should have an epic road trip. SO.
Here's part of our journey - one that involves the twisty, cobbled streets of Old Quebec, and the colorful doors that open onto them...
I love Quebec City. I love everything about it - the food, history, people, colors, streets, treasures, art. It is, rightly so, a UNESCO World Heritage Treasure. It's also a Jessie treasure, for I took one look and fell in love.
Vieux-Québec (Old Quebec) is beautiful. It also has a lot of stairs, connecting upper town to lower town. Ed might climb those stairs next year - at the very least, we'll be back so he can report on it for his CBS Sports Radio show. I loved the stairs. I loved the art. But I REALLY loved the doors (not a surprise to anyone who has traveled with me). I mean, really, REALLY loved the doors. So much so that I decided to take you on a tour, since there are so many great ones. Come along with me, and see some of the colorful, unique, interesting doors in Old Quebec.
An open door? What an invitation!
The unassuming door...
Most people would look at those gorgeous windows. But do you see the door, a third of the way down? I want to go in THERE.
Open both doors and sweep in, darling...
A narrow yellow door, complete with hanging lamp and brass doorhandle? Yes.
Am I the only one that wants to straighten the step?
I love EVERYTHING about this door
See that tiny lock? It's like the heart of the door, really.
Four circles for the 56. Genius.
Even the grey building for the funicular has a brilliantly painted door!
Warm welcome. This is my favorite door!
A door for children? It was very tiny...
And the matching one was open!
Which do you love more, the window or the door?
The decorations are just as good as the door!
A modern door, which somehow manages to fit right in. But how do you open it?
A door for elves?
More intriguing than the door is the glass display cabinet, shaped like a coffin.
Oh, those touches of red.
The steps, the plants, the star - a perfect door still life.
Open. Why yes, please, I think I'll come in and explore.
Stay tuned for more articles on Quebec City - I've got so many treasures from here to share.
Thanks to Ed, Lillie, and Michelle for their patience the many times I stopped for photo opps. Much appreciated!
