Context, organiser of critically acclaimed walking tours, expands its program in Shanghai with A Taste of Old Shanghai - a new annotated meal that offers visitors and locals alike the chance to understand more about classical Shanghai cuisine.

Shanghainese take enormous pride in their city, and that’s a feeling that extends to their food. Modern-day Shanghainese cuisine is derived from Benbang (local) cuisine—traditional home-style cooking—and from Haipai (all-embracing) cuisine that started when Shanghai became a trading port, and cuisines from across China were adapted to Shanghainese tastes. Led by a local food writer and cooking enthusiast, and held in one of the city’s top traditional restaurants, this annotated meal goes from appetizers to dessert, exploring the essential components of Shanghainese cuisine. A Taste of Old Shanghai leaves guests with a better understanding of traditional Shanghainese cuisine, its ingredients, and how it has and continues to evolve.

“The original branch of Jesse is a cramped dining room in the heart of the French Concession, serving what food critics and Shanghainese natives alike praise as some of the most authentic classics the city offers,” says docent Crystyl Mo. “From drunken chicken to crab roe tofu, Jesse does justice to the city's great homestyle dishes, meaning the dining room is always jam-packed and reservations are a must. I'm excited to introduce the best of Shanghainese cuisine to more enthusiastic eaters!”
