What Will You Find at the Yellow Springs Farmer's Market?
One of the harbingers of summer is the abundance that shows itself at local farmer's markets. Wherever you are in the world, you'll know you are at home when you find a market. From fresh homegrown vegetables to homemade food and supplies, you've hit the local jackpot. The world seems to overflow with colorful bounty, ready for your table or yard. And, think of the countless meals you've created from farmer's markets...Yes, it's an age-old ode to market day, sung for thousands of years.
So, this past week, we explored the Farmer's Market in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Yellow Springs is an eclectic town, full of great eateries, intriguing shops, and colorful characters. We love the library. My favorite ring is from the Tibet shop, there. And Antioch College is back in town, after a 2-year hiatus.
So. On a hot Saturday, we drove over with friends. Our two 9 year-old daughters eagerly explored, various flavored honey sticks in hands and mouths. They were most attracted by the bunny seeking a home, although neither actually asked if they could take him/her (whew!).
We bought herbs, green beans, and a huge jar of honey that was calling my name. The green beans were so tender and crisp - devoured at dinner, with a sprinkle of black Hawaiian sea salt. The next day, the leftover green beans graced our Big Salads. Delicious!
See what else we found, on our half-block long perambulations...
It was so lovely - such a friendly crowd, people talking and meeting old friends, making new ones. I loved the heat rising from the pavement, the sun casting everything in a bright light. But you know what made me the happiest?

This looks great! We used to live in Dayton, and we've visited Yellow Springs more times than I can count, but we never went to the Farmer's Market. I'm sorry we missed it when we lived so close.

Sarah - yes, Yellow Springs is a treasure!
Have you been to Tsao's Cuisine, a Chinese restaurant over by the base? it's incredible!

This looks like a great Farmers Market (I'm going to have to make a note of it and visit if we get down that way in Ohio). I'm a big fan of Farmers' Markets myself. We regularly visit Detroit's Eastern Market, plus we've been to the Toledo Farmers Market and Cleveland's great West End Market. The only bad thing about doing it when you travel is that it's tough to take a lot of the perishables home with you.

Eastern Market is the Grand-daddy of markets! i LOVE that one. i remember my mom bringing home BOXES of green onions, strawberries, etc.

You're right, Kymri! I love taking photos there - and try to be so fareful about crowd shots, especially since there are so many kids. What are your top tips for photographing markets?
