According to Bon Appétit restaurant editor Andrew Knowlton, “French was considered the best food, then Spanish took the torch, now it’s Japanese.’’ After years of drive-thrus, fast food burgers, and bacon, diners' tastebuds are now craving new options. Sushi has taken America by storm. In major cities, like New York, Sushi restaurants are regularly packed every night. Chefs from Japan have been brought to the United States to accommodate the excitement of this growing trend.
SUSHI, first made in Southeast Asia, is definitely an acquired taste that takes getting used to. There are many variations like the Rainbow Roll, Spider Roll, California Roll, etc. As for me, I am not a fan of sushi. That was until I discovered CANDY SUSHI. No sour taste, raw fish or seaweed for this guy. I go straight for the sugar!
Modern sushi is made from cooked vinegar, rice, and different types of raw fish or other seafood.
Candy sushi is made from Rice Krispies, Swedish fish, Fruit Roll Ups, and gummy worms. It is fun and easy to prepare but even better to eat!
Give this simple, kid-friendly recipe a try.
How to Make Candy Sushi
Ingredients:
• 1 Box Rice Krispies Treats
• 1 Bag Swedish Fish
• 1 Package Fruit Roll-Ups
• 1 Package Fruit By the Foot
• 1 Package Gummy Worms
Supplies Needed:
• Waxed Paper
• Rolling Pin
• Ruler
• Sharp Knife
Preparation:
Lay out one sheet of waxed paper. Give everyone a Rice Krispie Treat and an assorted supply of candies.
Procedure:
1. Use rolling pin to flatten the Rice Krispie treat into a 2”x 5” square.
2. Place one gummy worm and a Swedish fish on top of the Rice Krispie Treat.
3. Trim the edges of the candy to fit the exact size of the flattened square.
4. Roll the Rice Krispie square around the candies and stop once fully covered.
5. Trim off the excess Rice Krispie square and set aside for later use.
6. Roll like a log in your hands for ten seconds. Do not seal the ends.
7. Wrap the log with a Fruit Roll-Up or Fruit by the Foot candy piece.
8. Trim the excess Fruit Roll-Up and set aside for later use.
9. Cut candy log into circular ½” slices.
10. Take all of the excess pieces from trimming and make a super simple Nigiri-type Sushi by placing a Swedish fish on top of a small piece of Rice Krispie Treat. Wrap with a thin piece of Fruit Roll-Up candy.
11. Time to eat your yummy, delicious treat. ENJOY!
There are many different creative ways to make Candy Sushi. Have fun, experiment and see what works! A great way to make your treats look even more authentic is to use (dyed) green whipped cream as wasabi or chocolate sauce to replicate soy sauce. Thinly sliced Swedish fish makes the perfect ginger.
