Where to Eat in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Wondering where to eat in Grand Rapids, Michigan? Wonder no more: the latest location of our favorite, City Barbecue, is open and full of smoky goodness!
We went late this spring for a soft opening, and let me tell you how delicious it was...
The food:
Well, I love brisket. And it was DELICIOUS. But let me tell you about the pulled pork, because HOLY SMOKES. It was so good!
The sides are southern and delicious.
Hot tip: Get the Mac & Cheese! Get the fries with cheese and bacon! Get anything with cheese!
My husband got the brisket sandwich without cheese, and sides of green beans and greens. We were quite impressed with the way City Barbecue handles allergies: They completely were aware of the importance of new utensils, etc. for allergies. They cleaned the grill, got new knives and tools, and worked hard to be sure he would be safe. THANK YOU!!
Dessert calling your name? I grew up with a southern Gramma, and I absolutely LOVE banana pudding. Get that, if you've got southern roots, and you'll be happy. Of course, you can't go wrong with the triple chocolate cake or the peach cobbler...
The Accoutrements:
Sauce, of course. But there's also plenty of side additions (including jalapenos, pickles, onions, and more).
The SAUCE:
What is a BBQ joint without great sauce? Here is where City shines: so many sauces, from sweet to hot, and plenty in between. If your group doesn't end up with a zillion sauces to try, are you borgs?
The Space:
Clean, well-lit, inviting...
The Seating:
Booths, high tables, and a lovely outdoor patio!
Family friendly:
There's a super cute kids play area (thank you!), as well as whimsical touches throughout the restaurant.
Another reason to Love City Barbecue:
They give back. Called Backyard hospitality, City Barbecue donates 10% of pre-tax profits to local charities, as well as the Future Farmers of America, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and to local food rescue organizations to fight food insecurity.
But the best part of all?
The staff. I love a restaurant where the staff truly cares about the customer. It's rare (although people talk about it). Here, we experienced it first-hand - and were impressed.
Have you been to a City Barbecue near you? What did you love most?
