CURRENT EXHIBITIONS

The Power of Design

through December 17, 2010

Perspectives Gallery, Kresge Art Museum

Chinese textiles, costumes and costume accessories culled from the Wicker Collection, housed within MSU’s Apparel & Textile Design Program, Department of Art & Art History, comprise this exhibition.  Many of these Q’ing Dynasty artifacts traveled from Peking in the early 20th century and show how design can symbolically communicate order and hierarchy as well as religious-philosophical thought, and reveal the technical expertise of Q’ing Dynasty artisans.

Designing Women of Postwar Britain: Their Art and the Modern Interior

through December 17, 2010

Kresge Art Museum

The contribution of woman designers, such as Lucienne Day, Marian Mahler and Jacqueline Groag, significantly shaped the history of textile design in Britain after WW II.  Their works featured in this exhibition offered radical changes in textile design that contrasted dramatically with the monotony of what the textile industry had to offer prior to their arrival on the scene. Explosions of color and playfulness abound, reflecting contemporary artistic trends of geometric and abstract art.  Collaboration with the MSU Apparel and Textile Design Program, Department of Art & Art History.

MSU Campus Sculpture Tour

Online exhibition

Since its inception, the Public Art on Campus Committee has guided the installation of 13 major pieces of outdoor sculpture and one interior hanging sculpture. In addition, the PAOCC guided the installation of a bronze replica of The Spartan, and approved the installation of various pieces presented to the university that met the goal of providing high quality public art that enriches the learning environment, stimulates lively discussion and evokes aesthetic appreciation of the MSU campus.  This tour brings together works highlighting the exceptional sculpture installed on the campus of Michigan State University. It can be completed in full on the website or as a mobile walking tour, piece by piece.

Discoveries: Research, Science and Seeing the Collection

Online exhibition

This online exhibition shows the usually hidden aspects of curatorial work.  New insights into works of art in the collection can result from scientific analysis and conservation treatment, careful looking, and art historical research.  An object is not always what it seems.

Friends of Kresge Acquisition Highlights

Online exhibition

Since its founding in 1975, the Friends of Kresge Art Museum has worked closely with KAM directors to provide financial support for acquisitions and educational programming.  To honor Friends, this online exhibition features over 35 Friends’ acquisitions.  These works of art span 2,200 years of history and represent a wide variety of media.  Scroll over the timeline to reveal images and descriptions of a Corinthian vase, Renaissance and Baroque paintings, a Rodin sculpture, and contemporary prints, to name a few.  The breadth of art history, diverse cultures and artistic media represented in the exhibition offer excellent teaching and learning opportunities.
