International Service and Higher Education: At the Threshold of a New Era

March 30 to April 1, 2011, on the Danforth campus of Washington University in St. Louis.

This symposium is convened by the Center for Social Development and the
Gephardt Institute for Public Service at Washington University and DukeEngage of Duke University with the Brookings Institution, the Building Bridges Coalition, and ServiceWorld. The purpose is to advance effective international service-across all its forms - implemented in the context of higher education.

Symposium topics include:

*         the diverse models of international service in higher education;

*         the role of education in international service;

*         levers for scalable and sustainable service;

*         and impacts on hosting and sending communities and students.

Keynote and plenary speakers include:

*         Carol Bellamy, the International Baccalaureate Association

*         Rye Barcott, Marine Corps Captain, founder of Carolina for Kibera,
and author of It Happened on the Way to War: A Marine's Path to Peace
(forthcoming)

*         Professors Richard Sutton and Don Rubin, University of Georgia
system's GLOSSARI project

*         Senator Harris Wofford, Peace Corps architect and former university
president

Panel discussions include other scholars and practitioners such as Julie
Hatcher (Indiana University-Purdue University), Nick Longo (Providence
College), John Luria (Princeton University), Thomas Morgan (International
Partnership for Service Learning and Leadership), and Adam Weinberg
(WorldLearning).  The meeting will include time for discussion and conclude
with action steps for research, practice, and policy. Of particular interest is
