A new family tour of Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum lets children of all ages explore the world-class museum through imaginative activities and cutting-edge learning practices.

Context, organizer of critically acclaimed walking tours, expands its program in Amsterdam with Cabinet of Curiosities: Rijksmuseum for Families, a new tour designed specifically for families with children and young adults, focusing on artworks and artefacts from Dutch history and culture.
 

Context’s renowned family program was developed in 2008 by a skilled museum educator, and each walk is mapped and crafted to provide insightful learning experiences for children and their parents. Cabinet of Curiosities: Rijksmuseum for Families is the 14th of Context’s 24 cities to introduce a family-oriented walk.
 

Cabinet of Curiosities: Rijksmuseum for Families is led by a museum educator, who comes armed with supplementary material such as notebooks, magnifying glasses, and torches to help let children’s imaginations run wild, creating a learning experience designed to stay with participants through adulthood. Introducing visual thinking strategies, the family tour identifies the Rijksmuseum’s most stimulating cultural objects, and develops an understanding of their significance and art historical context via a set of inspiring activities.

“From ancient elk antlers to dolls houses, model ships and aircraft to pottery and paintings, the Rijksmuseum is truly a cabinet of curiosities—for those who know where to look,” says Context docent Claire Bown, who created the walk. “I designed the family tour to expose the magic of this world-class museum, and create a meaningful learning experience for enquiring minds of all ages.”
 

Cabinet of Curiosities lasts 2 and a half hours and is available Monday to Sunday and costs €280 per family party, plus €15 per adult (over 18) for museum entry. As with all Context walking seminars, groups are led by a credentialed expert and limited to six (6) people maximum.
