If you’re a business traveler, you know the grind of travel – long flights, new cities, having to be ON for work, and trying to stay as healthy as possible, while hopefully carving time to learn about and enjoy a new destination. Here are our top tips and tricks for a successful journey.

23 Tips and Tricks for Business Travelers

Use a rewards credit card to save money and earn perks

You know this, but it bears saying again and again. Use your rewards credit cards for miles. Get your groceries, gas, parking, etc. with the card, and you will see the miles – and perks – add up.

Skip the hotels – do this instead

There are advantages to staying in a hotel, but one thing that will make your business travels easier and happier is staying in a place that feels like home. This latest trend, called the sharing economy, is making travel better for everyone by offering a space (in a home or apartment, through Airbnb, Flipkey, etc.). But if you don’t have time to search, reserve, and then keep checking, try a company called MetroResidences – offering corporate serviced apartments in Singapore. There are concierge services, 24/7 in-house maintenance, and your OWN space, particularly welcoming to relax and refresh.

Stick with one or two airlines for their frequent flyer programs

Pay attention to where you’re scheduled to go over the next few years, and research the airlines that offer the best flights. Pick the ones that you’ll use, and enroll in their frequent flyer programs. You’ll get upgrades, perks, and be able to use of their business lounges in the airport.

Fly non-stop

Although it might cost you more money, it will definitely save you time and energy. It is always a good idea as well to compare airfares. While you may make the assumption that direct flights are pricey, if you use expert airfare booking services, they can often assure you that you are getting the best possible deal.

Take the flight route that works for you

Can you sleep on a plane? Take the redeye. Can’t? Take a day flight. Each person is different – find a flight route that works for your body and mind.

Power up!

Keep devices charged (need I say more?). Also, carry a charged battery charger & travel power strip, so if there are multiple travelers wanting to charge off an outlet, you all can share in the joy.

Pack snacks and a collapsible water bottle

I get hangry – it’s a very real thing. I pack healthy snacks and be sure to keep my blood sugar levels up. I also take a collapsible water bottle – they lie flat, and then fill quickly. I always keep one in my purse and one in my carryon.

Ask for upgrades

It’s easy to ask for upgrades – remember to ask nicely - and when the desk is less busy.

Be sure your passport is always renewed early

Don't make the mistake of not being allowed in because your passport will expire soon. If you travel frequently, get a second passport (this is a thing!).

Global Entry and Precheck

If you’re flying internationally, it’s a great idea to sign up for global entry. It’s TSA’s system to expedite customs lines. The TSA precheck offers expedited security lines.

Packing tips

Everyone has their own packing system (cubes, rolling, Hermione’s bag with an undetectable extension charm). But here’s something that works and takes a worry off your mind - keep a suitcase just for your business travels, with supplies. It’s also a good idea to have a list that you use every time, to make sure nothing is forgotten (feed the cat!).

Always dress well

This is smart, for so many reasons. You’ll be perceived and treated better (I am loathe to say this, but it’s a fact). You’ll present a professional image when you disembark, need to hail a cab, or are working. Tip: slip on shoes are a smart traveler’s secret trick – for airplanes, comfort, and especially in countries where you must remove your shoes.

Ask for help

You could spend a great deal of time trying to figure things out, OR you could ask for help. Whether it is directions, meals, problems that arise, illness, or transportation, asking for help will reduce your stress and solve your problems.

Find ways to reduce your stress

Love to go for a run in the morning? Take your shoes. Need some quiet time to recharge? Build it into your schedule. Find ways that work for you to reduce your stress. This will help you with working in a new environment with a new team, speaking and presenting, and more – a relaxed mind is a sharp one.

Be organized

Along with the always packed suitcase, be organized in your travels! Always keep your papers in one place (and send an email copy to yourself). Have systems in place so that you are never searching for your things - always keep your earbuds in one place, cords in another, etc.

Try not to work in-flight

I know this is contrary to what most business travelers do, but if you can, follow that advice. Bring a book (keep unplugged!). Sleep. Arrive rested instead of frazzled.

Jet lag

You know the drill. Eat. Sleep if you can (or not). Stay hydrated. Set your clocks (or not). Stay awake when the sun is shining. Here are a few of our best jet lag tips articles: Jet Lag. Even the Sound of it Wears Me Out and Top Tips for Getting Through Long-Haul Flights.

Eat well & skip the alcohol

Whether you’re flying or in-country, be sure to eat well (no junk food!) and avoid alcohol as much as possible. The first so that your body stays healthy, the second so that your mind does. Nothing betrays your business more than appearing drunk or trying to give a presentation while hung over.

Stay healthy!

You know what makes you healthy at home – follow those things! As well, take Emergen-C, wash your hands, clean the tray on your flight before the attendant sets your meal down, bring your own water, walk during the flight, walk at your destination, and stay hydrated.

Explore where you are

Find out local events and attend them, if your schedule allows! You might only have one evening free, but if there’s an incredible concert, play, or (my favorite) outdoor Shakespeare play, you’ll recharge your mind, body, and soul there. Visit an art gallery, museum, bookstore, or sit at a café and watch the world go by.

Learn the basics in the language

This shows respect for your host culture, but also will help you get along (especially if you have to go to the bathroom!).

Kindness

From the moment you set out to the moment you get back, travel with kindness. It isn’t easy (travel, or traveling with kindness), but remember that everyone is stressed and unkindness flares easily and often. By being kind and reacting with calmness and friendliness, you will change your day – as well as that of everyone you interact with.

Travel with wonder

I was talking about this with a friend of mine the other day. When we experience life with wonder, our whole worldview changes. Don’t be that jaded traveler that goes to meetings and then back to the hotel to work. Talk with people, ask about their lives, show interest, follow the walking path to the beach, try new foods, travel with joy and wonder. Your journeys will be forever changed.
