The Canadian Army was formed in 1883 when the Infantry School Corps, Company A, was created in Fredericton. 

Here’s how it works:

With the snared beat of drum sticks and the haunting sounds of a bagpipe, period-dressed, red-coated Guards enter Officer’s Square in downtown Fredericton. Once formed into rows, the Guard stands at attention, as the lone bagpipe maintains its plaintive tune. After the Guard has been inspected, the men re-enact history with rifle salutes in various formations.

If you’re lucky, as I was, you may be chosen to inspect the guard. I will tell you, I was possibly the slowest Guard inspector they’d ever had, because I was absolutely entranced with the stories of each guard member. Most were college students (what an incredible summer job!), and each had an interesting story. I could only imagine the honor it is to serve in the Guard, and the joy they feel in reenacting history for countless visitors.

You feel bereft, as well as a part of history (at least Fredericton's daily history), as the Guard exits the square to the same accompaniment by the talented pipes and drums.

* In July and August, 7 days a week, the Guard changes at 11am and 4pm. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, there is an additional ceremony at 7pm.
* Sentry duty changes every hour on the hour at City Hall.
* The Historic Garrison District, a National Historic Site and Provincial Heritage site, includes the Officer’s Square, museums, shopes, heritage buildings, and more in a 2 block area in downtown Fredericton.
