Your 5 Best Places to Take A Historical Family Vacation
If your family’s anything like our family, you love to talk and to learn about history, whether that’s in the local area or on the other side of the world. You’ll know you’ve caught the bug if you can’t get enough of documentaries and the history channel.
Nothing quite brings history to life like going to visit some of the places where the iconic moments that shaped our times took place. But with so much history all around us, how can we decide where to visit first?
The good news is that we’ve put in the research for you and compiled a list of the best historical spots throughout the United States. Here’s where you’ll want to think about visiting when this pandemic is all over.
Your 5 Best Places to Take A Historical Family Vacation
1. St. Augustine
If it’s historical cities that you’re looking for, you’re going to struggle to find a better destination than this one. That’s because it’s the oldest city in the United States, founded in the early colonial days by Spanish settlers. It has a beautiful historic quarter that’s worth wandering down, and legend has it that it’s even home to its own fountain of youth.
2. Boston
Boston itself has a huge amount of history and culture that should be enough to satisfy even the most curious of history buffs, and it also has the benefit of being just 14 miles away from Salem, home of the iconic (and notorious) witch trials. To make your vacation even more memorable, why not round things off by taking a cruise from Boston, Massachusetts as you head home?
3. Washington, DC
DC is a definite no-brainer if you’re looking for history, if only because it’s the capital of the United States and home to everything from the White House to the Capitol Building and the Lincoln Memorial. Because it’s such a popular destination for people, there’s also plenty of other amenities on offer, from great restaurants to some of the most unique hotels in the country.
4. Philadelphia
Philly has almost as much history as Washington does, due in part because it was the home of Benjamin Franklin and the first capital city of the country before Washington D.C took over. As well as having plenty of national history, it also has a bunch of museums that are dedicated to the history and display of contemporary and classical art.
5. Gettysburg
This iconic Civil War battlefield was the site of the iconic Gettysburg Address and it’s the perfect place to learn everything you could ever want to know about the war that shaped America. While you’re at it, be sure to stop by the Museum of History and to check out the historic artifacts that help to bring the period to life.
Hot Tip: One way to keep costs down while you’re traveling is to look into booking an Airbnb. There’s an art and a science to finding the right Airbnb, and if you’re keen on history then you may even want to look for one in a listed or historical building.
