Kevin Nguyen is a current third year Western student studying mechanical engineering. All the way from Vietnam, he has come to Canada to study. He loves to travel and is a very social person. 

 
What motivated your decision to pursue a degree abroad? How/why did you choose where to go?
After doing hours of researching for programs that fit my best interest, I decided to complete my academics in Canada due to the number of opportunities the school has to offer and because there are many companies that I would like to pursue in Toronto after graduating. Also, I wanted to make more connections with people in Canada so I can understand more of the Canadian culture and differences. 

What has your experience been like? Can you share some favorite memories – and challenges?
My experience here in Canada is very different from back home. From getting used to the time changes to the weather. Although, my time being in Canada has been a blast! I had the opportunity to meet new friends, join different clubs and expand my knowledge on the culture here. My favourite memory was seeing the winter snowfall for the first time. There were also some challenges I have had to face as well such as being away from my family and getting used to the language spoken here. 

What skills have you developed from your international education experience?
Some of the skills I’ve adapted from learning internationally would be getting better at communicating to people through voicing my needs/concerns. I developed this skill by talking to more people and understanding people’s different point of views. 
 
What has surprised you most about earning a degree abroad?
One of the top things that have surprised me while learning abroad would be the amount of partying that goes on in university. It was very different for me because in my country, academics always comes first therefore most students are not allowed to go out and enjoy their free time. 

Any advice for students thinking about studying overseas? What are some highlights or things that you gained or changed your perspective?
My advice for students who are thinking about studying overseas is to take your time learning about the culture and that it will be a little hard at first, but you will eventually get used to it. I would also say that it will be challenging at first, but things will get easier and importantly, have fun and put yourself out there so that you can experience new things! 

How has international education impacted or influenced your cultural identity?
Studying internationally has impacted me through cultural identity because I was able to understand what it is like being a Canadian student and it had opened my eyes up to people with different cultures and backgrounds which I would not typically see in my country. 

Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?
Studying in a new country is a lot of fun and provides an endless amount of opportunities. It is very challenging, but it is a different and great experience. 

Jenny Tran is a first year student at Fanshawe College studying General Arts and Science before applying to the Dental Hygiene program. She has a background in cosmetology and graduated her program in 2022. Jenny enjoys going to the gym, traveling, baking, and shopping. She also loves listening to people's stories and enjoys learning from other's experiences!
