Whether it’s the bright lights of cities or the scenes in the quieter areas of the UK, there are plenty of destinations ideal for holiday capturing. Let unforgettable moments unfold during a holiday embracing the charm of Britain. Despite often unpredictable weather, the UK remains a top spot for holiday-makers and photographers alike.
From cities with the old-town feels like York, to the world-renowned boroughs of the capital, the UK has it all. Capture so much across the four nations of Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and devour the UK’s beloved culture. Take the pressure of planning off and let this guide give you all the information you need before heading to the picture-perfect spots.
York
In the North Yorkshire county, York hosts stunning architecture and traditional British feels. Wander down narrow cobblestone streets and see both nationally and internationally renowned sites to capture. From the cosiness of the Shambles Street to the Minster, there is so much culture to please the eye and the camera lens.
Stroll the ancient walls which encompass the whole city centre. Covering around 2 miles, the walls provide great viewpoints of the cityscape ideal for photography. Bootham Bar is one of the many historic gates into the city amid the wall structure. This point showcases the beauty of history intertwining with modern life today.
Capture the city skyline from Clifford’s Tower. What was originally part of York’s castle now remains as a large tower on a low mound. As well as the historic exhibitions in the tower, be sure to photograph the breathtaking views from the top. Including the Minster, the River Ouse, and the surrounding Yorkshire countryside, this provides the perfect viewpoint to see everything the area has to offer.
The Lake District
In the Northern county of Cumbria, the Lake District is a countryside haven for wildlife and nature photography. Abundant with serene locations across the National Park landscapes, guests can enjoy a relaxing stay.
Venture up Cat Bells which is a relatively small peak that still offers sublime panoramic views across the largest lake, Derwentwater. Early risers could even enjoy this at sunrise, to capture how the landscape differs when lit up at dawn. Even the ridge on the way up to the summit hosts a variety of vantage points to capture panoramas, should you not want to go all the way up the 3.5-mile route!
Though the Lake District is known for its national popularity and is often booked and busy, there are still plenty of late quirky stays for you to find last minute! Find the perfect Insta-worthy accommodation and capture every little detail. Whether that’s a traditional stone cottage or a cosy log cabin, the landscape has you covered. Capture evenings by the fireside and cosy up around home-cooked dining during colder months for even more photo opportunities.
The Scottish Highlands
Moving away from English soil, the Scottish highlands have plenty of picture-perfect backdrops! From castle ruins to local villages and natural beauty, head up North for a different view of the UK at its best.
Capture the fantasy waters of Loch Ness, alongside its scenic surroundings. Holding more water volume than all of the lakes in England and Wales combined, the sheer size is sure to bring out the curious. If you’re just missing the sights of Nessie, capture the array of wildlife instead. It’s even been said to be home to bottlenose dolphins!
For a chance to see the most of the Highlands as possible, the renowned North Coast 500 route takes drivers around the northernmost loop from Inverness to Applecross on the West. Over 500 miles in length, you’re guaranteed to spot secluded coves as well as the dramatic panoramas. Picture blue and green in masses, as well as white sands of famous beaches.
It would be rude to go this far up without visiting the most Northern point! John O’Groats is synonymous with being the famous starting point of a cross-country expedition. Yet it’s equally home to a colourful village and rare wildlife species to capture. Visit the Bumble Bee Project for unique photographs of the animals that are so hard to find in other areas of the world.
London
Picturesque in a different way, the capital city boasts colour and light like nowhere else in the UK. From the world-famous landmarks to the boroughs full of local livelihoods, the streets attract tourists from around the world.
For a skyline shot, head up some of the tallest buildings. From the Shard to the Sky Garden and the AM Orbit, photograph the iconic skyline as the sun sets and night falls across London. For shots of urban greenery, Primrose Hill offers great views of the city too alongside some natural beauty.
Discover the world of idyllic short breaks to the capital. Soak up the sights of world-famous landmarks and rest your legs on a luxury cruise down the Thames. London is a paradise for theatre and food lovers too, so rest assured the evenings will be full of things to do.
Snowdonia National Park
In North Wales, Snowdonia National Park offers expanses of rugged terrains for landscape photographers in particular, to enjoy. From the highest peak of Snowdon to the cascading valleys, there is plenty to capture.
Hike up one of the UK’s highest peaks standing over 3,000 feet and capture the stunning views from the summit. Why not discover three countries across the UK’s quartet and take on the National Three Peaks Challenge? For postcard-perfect photos across England, Scotland, and Wales, it won’t get much better.
See the rushing waterfalls making up the Ogwen Valley and capture the stunning colours of Llyn Elsi’s village life reflecting onto still waters. Your camera roll is guaranteed to be full after a trip here.
The UK is a haven for everyone and that leaves no exception for photographers. Capture the luscious landscapes of the countryside to cityscapes and everything in between. From North to South, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Embrace the photogenic landscape.
