Road Trip 101: Ice Cream in Ohio
While driving, it's always good to stop and stretch. Now, if this stopping and stretching involves food, so much the better. On our last drive on I75 in Ohio, we stopped in the town of Findlay - we'd heard about a fantastic homemade ice cream and chocolates store. What's not to love?
Take the main exit for Findlay and just follow that road east until you start hitting the downtown. Dietsch Brothers Fine Chocolates and Ice Cream is located on the north (left) side of the road, before you hit the main street traffic light. It is unassuming on the outside, but filled with treasures.
When you first walk in, you'll be faced with a gauntlet of homemade chocolates. Never fear. Go for the ice cream, first!! And there is SO MUCH to choose from - a plethora of flavors. Another sign shows the varieties of fountain treats available.
We were helped by an amiable young man. I asked for a sample of the Apple Pie Ice Cream (daily special) but was told that samples weren't given. I chose it anyway, and was VERY glad I did - it is, quite possibly, the best ice cream I've ever had (and my middle name is Ice Cream, I learned when I was very young). It was full of apple pie goodness - AND - streaks of streusel topping. Delicious!
Everyone's ice cream choices were perfect; the place was crowded with happy families of all ages. It wasn't too loud, and there are both booths and tables to sit at.
On the way out, hit the chocolate counter for some gifts (include a gift for yourself).
Road Trip Stop? Pure genius.
Dietsch Brothers was founded in 1937. That's a lot of delicious years, for this family business. Highly recommended!
