You’d think by the name that any trip to Sugar Hill, NH would be sweet. Recently I had the chance to stay at the Sugar Hill Inn and was amazed at the transformation since I last visited two years ago.  The first time I came here owner, Steve Allen had just purchased the inn.  He told me about the changes he had in mind for the inn – new pool, tavern and upgraded suites.  In two short years since that time, almost a total transformation has taken place.  Sugar Hill Inn is now a top ten inn in New Hampshire and very possibly in New England. 

Together, Steve and his innkeeper Theresa have redecorated and rebuilt just about every room and cottage at the inn. Gone is the dated Bavarian style dining room; in its place is a gorgeous gold and maroon papered room with richly upholstered chairs and tables.  What was formerly a living room is now a pub with quality woodworking and a full service bar, tended many nights by Steve himself. The living room and library offer comfortable seating, a full array of books, area brochures and even a chess table.  Wi-fi is also available throughout the inn.  While historic features have been preserved, like the original beams and fireplaces dating back to the early 1800s, the modern amenities and fresh décor fit right in.  The Bette Davis Suite, where the actress herself slept many times while vacationing at the inn, still has pine floors, country-style décor, a beautiful mountain view and deep eves, but a fireplace and deep soaking tub have been added.  I think Bette would approve.  

I had the chance to stay in the Dream Cottage, which was built just about a year ago.  I have to say I've stayed at many inns, but never found such indulgent offerings as here.  The cottage has high ceilings, giving it a great sense of spaciousness.  The bath has a large window that overlooks the room, so you can soak in the deep double whirlpool tub and watch the flat screen TV or enjoy the fireplace.  The shower is as huge, with multi-jets. The granite tiles and pebbled floor, which actually massages your feet, gives it the feel of an outdoor shower. There is a private sauna in the bathroom too. I don't think I've ever seen a private sauna in a guest room before!  That will be perfect for ski season.

The cottage has a big porch, with a swinging bench and nice wicker chairs.  We were there during fall foliage season. When we came out of the door, the sun lit the top of a nearby mountain and it was aflame in color.  Mother Nature certainly doesn’t hold back here.  In June, these mountains are a field of blues, purples and pinks with lupines growing naturally everywhere.

We had the opportunity to dine at the inn.  The food was beautifully presented and equally delicious.  I was intrigued by the baked parmesan cup the Caesar salad was served in, and the decadent desserts.  The four course prix-fixe dinner was $49; a real value for the presentation and quality of the food. There’s a lovely wine list too, and a full compliment of spirits at the bar. I would highly recommend eating at the inn, if you're staying there.

Overall, this is among my favorite inns I've visited in New England, which certainly puts it in the Top Ten. From the beautiful, rich tones to the amenities and food, you can't beat the Sugar Hill Inn for a romantic getaway.
