There are special places which capture our imagination – and we dream and dream of being there. Tuscany, Fiji, Provence, Iceland, the Orkney Islands. There are books written by people who have moved to these places, which tell of the travails of settling in, of intercultural adjustment and learning to be a local.

Writing is both a creative and a solitary endeavor. Sometimes, we write furiously, racing to wring every last beautiful word out of our mind before we forget. At other times, it can be difficult to think of the words you want to write. If you've ever ridden an airplane, you know exactly what can happen when a kid is onboard. It can range from stress to boredom to ear pain. It's never easy, but it's even worse when the kid in question is YOUR kid. Now, we can deal with the ear pain (nursing a baby, gum, jaw exercises by making funny faces, etc.), but the stress and boredom are a bit more difficult.

Some of us are lucky enough to fall into careers that we love, where just coming to work is a joyful part of the day. Fewer have been purposeful, have seized the brass ring and gotten into those careers through hard work, perseverance and, yes, even a little bit of luck.
